Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are one of the easiest crops I have experienced. To be very honest, I was never a sweet potato lover until a friendly neighbor of mine gave me a slip. Slips are the rooted sprouts that grow from an actual mature sweet potato. They are used to growing new sweet potato plants. However, I got sweet potato plants simply by sticking the end of a vine in some quality soil and in a few weeks, you’ll have a good strong rooted plant.

You'll know your plant is ready to move to a bigger space when you see various new leaves developing. For better production, it is recommended to plant them directly in the ground, but if you don't have the space at home, a big pot will also do the job, even though you won't get the same amount of harvest. The sweet potato will grow its best when it's grown in full sun, in loose soil and gets deeply watered 3-4 times a week. To get a stronger plant and more harvest, it is recommended to throw soil on the vines after 2 months that it has already been growing. This allows the plant to get more roots and potentially produce more sweet potatoes. It is also recommended pinching off any flowers that appear during the growing season. This will encourage the pant to put its energy into producing larger tubers. After 3 to 4 months, you'll be ready to harvest!

It's mind-blowing to see how many shapes and sizes of sweet potatoes you will get. After harvesting, be aware that new plants will sprout if there are any tubers left in the ground, creating a new opportunity for harvest. And now that I have tasted my own sweet potatoes, yes I became a lover!
